25 December 1812
My dearest Rosamond,
I present this journal to you with great pleasure, and with the hope that you will make use of it in the coming months. You are approaching a time in life that comes only once, and I hope you will record all that you see and do while in London. Coming out and being presented at Court are quite significant experiences in a young lady’s life, and you would do well to set down your memories in writing for future contemplation.
You have grown into a pleasing young woman. I am glad to see how carefully you have been prepared. I trust you will conduct yourself well in society, and that your London Season will answer to the hopes your family has long held for you.
With all my love,
Grandmother
